Meeting Recap: 11/28/06

Hi Friends.
Hope everyone had a fantastic break. Hang in there for these next few weeks.

Activities:
Katrina Relief Bazaar
Wednesday December 6th - Set up in Upper Tarble from 8 am - 6PM (in shifts). We will be moving in sale items and pricing for the big sale.

Thursday December 7th - The actual sale. 10:30 am - 8 PM. Please sign-up for a shift to help out at the sale, and if you have the time, we will need people to move items from Upper Tarble that have not been sold.

Pierre has the shift schedule that he will e-mail around at some point. Contact him (pfont1) if you have any questions.

Saturday of Service at the Freeman Cultural Arts Center
December 9th - Help out at the Crafts Fair. Make holiday gifts, sing carols, serve food, play with kids, etc. There will be two shifts. 10 AM - 1:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Contact Teresa Kelley '07 (tkelley1) if you want to go. Campus mail your Hold Harmless Form to Teresa also.

Meeting:
THIS THURSDAY - there is a Rotary Meeting at Borough Hall in the Ville (the building with the library) to discuss the Guatemala Project. We would like members to be there, as this would cover the "International Service" aspect of our club.

General Announcements:
Next week will be our last meeting for the semester. So, come with your suggestions for next semester so that we can plan activities over winter break. For the fun fair next spring, we will need to think of an organization or cause for our fundraiser. Keep that in mind.

Activities to look forward to - Habitat for Humanity, The Hunger Walk, more Ronald McDonald House, etc.

Take care,
Lin

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sorry for the delay, here's the recap from Tuesday.
Nov. 21st, 2006

News:
We have a "Twin Club" at the University of Mongolia! :) Good job, Bettina! Our first project will be a gift exchange. We talked about taking pictures of the campus and ourselves to put together in an album. If you have any suggestions contact Bettina. ktam1@swarthmore.edu

Pierre and I are setting up a meeting with the SBC to discuss budget plans and getting back the Rotaract Charter. :O
We would like some freshmen members to be involved in this process also because it would benefit the group. Let us know if you would like to help us in the planning stages.

Meetings:
Nov 30th 4:30 PM: The board of the Swarthmore Rotary Club is having a meeting at Borough Hall (the building with the library down in the Ville). to talk about Swarthmore Rotary's current "International Service" project - helping to provide clean water to communities in Guatemala. You can contact Swarthmore Rotary President Ron VanLangeveld with any questions. Please let us know if you are planning on attending the meeting.

Activities:
Bazaar for Katrina Relief: Pierre has a sign up sheet for Bazaar shifts. I was going to post the shift schedule on the blog....but I stupidly left the sheet in my room on campus. I will have the schedule online as soon as I get back to campus. Please contact pfont1@swarthmore if you have any interest in helping out.

Dec 9th, 2006:
Saturday of Service Event--volunteer with a Craft Fair at the Freeman Cultural Arts Center. Volunteers are needed to help run stations for children, making holiday presents (like using fabric to decorate blank notebooks), watching movies or reading stories. Volunteers can also help with serving food and singing carols during the event. The set-up will begin at 10am, and the day runs until 5pm. Teresa is offering transportation from Swarthmore to the Freeman Cultural Arts Center in Chester at 10am and 1:30pm, so that volunteers can plan to spend half of the day or the full time.

Contact Teresa if you are interested in this event at tkelley1@swarthmore.edu -- I'm pretty sure you will have to campus mail another set of Hold Harmless forms. (Teresa Kelley '07).

Enjoy your breaks!

Cheers!

-WE WILL NOT BE MEETING NEXT TUESDAY AT 7:30 PM!!!!! Instead, we will meet Wednesday, November 15, at 5:30, possibly somewhere in the Science Center. We will be eating CHINESE TAKE-OUT :) and possibly watching a DVD, possibly of Scrubs (suggestions for other entertainment are welcome!) Of course, everything else that usually happens at a meeting will also happen at that time. Please e-mail Smitha (sneeruk1@swarthmore.edu) with what Chinese food you want to order and any suggestions for DVDs/other entertainment).

-We will be going to Friends Hospital in Philadelphia on Satuday, November 18 for Gardening with Friends. This event will have us sprucing up a historic 100-acre garden (raking, weeding, mulching, planting, and trimming!) Lunch will be provided! No tools are required, but if you have gardening tools, shovels, etc., please bring them. Jim and Smitha will be driving us. We will leave from Parrish Circle at 9:15 AM and will be back by 3 PM at the latest. Space might be limited because we can only fit so many people in Jim and Smitha's cars. E-mail pfont1 or lgyi1 if you are interested in going!

- If we can't fit you in for Gardening with Friends, but still want to do service that day, go to the City Year Serve-a-thon 2006. There will be renovation of Bellfield Recreation Center featuring mural painting and much more (with hundreds of volunteers!) If you're interested, e-mail Teresa Kelley '07 There will be 2 release forms you will need to sign and campus mail to her.

-We currently are trying to fill the period from Nov. 18 until the end of the semester with projects. There will be the Katrina Relief Bazaar (yard sale) to help out at on Dec. 6 and 7 (tentatively), but we are still looking for more projects. E-mail us if you have any suggestions!

-The Director of Professional Development officer position is still open! This officer will invite guests to meetings (Rotary members, students from other clubs, representatives from service organizations in the area, etc.) This officer will also be in charge of relations with other clubs on campus and will see what projects we can do with other clubs.

-We have two new officers!

Director of International Service: Bettina Tam (ktam1)

Director of Club Service: Smitha Neerukonda (sneeruk1)

-Bettina is looking into contacting a Rotaract Club in Hong Kong to see if we can form a "Twin Club" relationship with pen-pals, celebrating festivals of the other country, joint service projects, etc.

That's it! See you next WEDNESDAY at 5:30 PM!

-Pierre
